Treatment room

The success of periodontal treatment depends on the aftercare.

Supportive periodontal therapy

Periodontitis is a chronic disease: even after successful treatment, bacteria can recolonise the gum pockets.

That is why regular aftercare alongside treatment – known as supportive periodontal therapy – is so important. It secures the result, prevents the inflammation from flaring up again and protects your teeth from loosening and loss in the long term. You can read more about the disease itself and the actual treatment on our periodontal treatment page.

What happens at a supportive therapy appointment

Check
We measure the gum pockets, check whether the gums bleed and compare the results with previous findings.
Targeted cleaning
We gently remove deposits on the teeth and in the gum pockets – using hand instruments, ultrasound and powder jet.
Oral hygiene check
We discuss how well your home care is working and adapt aids such as interdental brushes to you.
Individual interval
Depending on severity and risk, we decide how often aftercare should take place – usually one to three times a year.

Cleaning during aftercare follows the GBT concept: using AIRFLOW® and – in deeper gum pockets – PERIOFLOW®, we remove the biofilm particularly gently, without putting unnecessary strain on the gums and root surfaces.
