Prevention is better than cure – professional cleaning is at the heart of our prophylaxis.

Professional teeth cleaning

Even with careful oral hygiene, your toothbrush cannot reach everywhere.

Between the teeth, along the gum line and in small niches, a bacterial film (biofilm) builds up and hardens into tartar over time. It is the main cause of caries, gum inflammation and periodontitis. During professional teeth cleaning we remove this biofilm thoroughly and gently – for healthy teeth, healthy gums and a fresh, radiant smile.

Our prophylaxis concept: Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)

What is GBT?

For prophylaxis we follow the GBT concept (Guided Biofilm Therapy) developed by the Swiss manufacturer EMS. It is a scientifically based, systematic treatment protocol that focuses on biofilm – because biofilm, not just visible tartar, is what actually causes caries and gum disease.

The basic idea: we first make the biofilm visible and then remove it specifically – rather than cleaning by feel. The key tool is AIRFLOW® technology: a fine, warm jet of water, air and an extremely fine powder gently removes deposits and stains from teeth, fillings, crowns, implants and braces. Scraping is reduced to a minimum and abrasive polishing is no longer needed. This is more comfortable for you and protects your enamel and gums.

The 8 steps of Guided Biofilm Therapy

1. Assessment & infection control
We examine your teeth, gums and implants. An antibacterial mouth rinse at the start reduces the number of germs.
2. Disclosing the biofilm
A disclosing agent colours the otherwise invisible biofilm – so both we and you can see exactly where cleaning is needed.
3. Motivation & instruction
Using the coloured areas, we show you the problem zones and practise the right brushing technique and aids such as interdental brushes with you.
4. AIRFLOW®
With the warm powder-and-water jet we remove biofilm, stains and young tartar – on teeth, between teeth, around implants and restorations.
5. PERIOFLOW®
If needed, we also clean deeper gum pockets and the areas around implants using a special, fine nozzle.
6. PIEZON® PS
Any remaining hard tartar is then removed minimally invasively with a particularly slim ultrasonic instrument.
7. Check
A final check makes sure the biofilm has been removed completely. We apply fluoride to protect the enamel.
8. Recall
Depending on your individual risk, we agree together when your next prophylaxis appointment makes sense.

Your benefits with GBT

Your benefits

  • Comfortable & low-pain
  • Gentle on enamel & gums
  • Thorough, right into the niches
  • Suitable for implants & braces

How often professional cleaning makes sense depends on your personal risk. For many patients we recommend once or twice a year; with gum problems, braces, implants, during pregnancy or if you smoke, shorter intervals can be useful.

A professional cleaning is recommended before teeth whitening anyway. Just ask us – we will be happy to give you detailed, individual advice.
